Caboolture Sawmill Expansion

24 July 2018

FRIDAY, 6th JULY, 2018

Today AKD Softwoods welcomed Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to our Queensland site to announce the expansion and improvement of the Caboolture sawmill operation. With a joint overall investment of over $50 million, the project will add over 100 fulltime positions and more than double the output of the business by 2022. This project would be unlikely to go ahead without the Turnbull Government’s support.

“The AKD Team is delighted with the announcement”, says CEO Shane Vicary, adding “this grant provides us with an opportunity to develop the Caboolture operation into an internationally competitive business; processing Queensland logs, through Queensland facilities, with Queensland employees, creating timber for Queensland housing”.

Shane Vicary comments that “in addition to many economic benefits the real gains will be seen in the job opportunities and security provided to not only AKD’s current and future employees, but also the contribution to the wider Moreton Bay and Queensland region”.

AKD would like to acknowledge key supplier and stakeholder Hancock Queensland Plantations (HQP), whose support and encouragement has been instrumental in this expansion opportunity. AKD would also like to recognise the strong and positive support of the Moreton Bay Regional Council.

“When we acquired the Caboolture business this year, we identified the potential to grow due to the quality of the employees, the quality log resource and Australia’s strong demand for timber sourced from sustainably managed plantations. The key constraint for the site has been the operational layout, this grant enables us to unlock the potential”, explains Vicary.

The Caboolture site currently processes 215,000m3 of sawlog, the volume will increase to 450,000m3 reducing Australia’s reliance on imported timber.
